Shooting Great Winter Pictures

Winter Photos

Taking a holiday in the Swiss Alps? It makes perfect sense to pack your camera and photography equipment and immortalize your first time frolicking in the snow. Or perhaps your little girl has just dedicated the first snowman she made for you. Either way, you should ignore the possibilities of foggy lenses and blurry snow landscape photos and concentrate on taking good winter time shots. Whether you own a cutting edge digital camera or a reliable 35mm affair, even the most technologically advanced device is useless if you do not suit up to take photos in the treacherous snow. Not only will you suffer from bodily injury, your camera might also be victim to the snow and ice.

Equipment-wise, you can counter the foggy lens phenomena by waiting several minutes for your lens to clear up. You should ever attempt to wipe your lens as the smudge left on the surface might cause permanent damage. And to avoid your camera breaking down during crucial moments especially when it?s snowy yet sunny outside, you should keep switching your cold batteries with warm ones when necessary. These are easily heated up in the palm of your hand or in your pocket.

Lastly, you should never miss the opportunity of capturing images of frozen bodies of water on film. This chance does not come by very often so do have them immortalized in digital format immediately.

Avoiding 3 Common Photography Errors

By nature, no one is perfect and even the most renowned photographers sometimes make errors when they immerse themselves in photography. Here?s a quick guide on the most familiar photography mistakes one can make and what can be done to counter them.

Firstly, it is undeniable that blurry photos are a pet peeve for many photographers, be they amateurs or professional. A good cost effective way to rectify this is to keep a tripod handy. Otherwise, just utilize a faster ISO whenever you fire up your digital camera. Increased shutter speed usually means less shakes will be produced.

Next, red eyes on your subject can be a very annoying element especially when this error stood out like a sore thumb. This usually happens when one takes pictures using a built-in flash. To remedy this, invest in a flash bracket and cord, or remote flash triggers so that the flash goes off well.

Finally, another annoying photography error that will cause you to pull out your hair in frustration is lens flare. This happens when the lens flare is directly exposed to light, causing the rays to be trapped inside the lens. Lens flare is fine when you put it there during image editing processes via Photoshop but it?s not pleasant if it occurs during an inopportune time. To counter this, simply install a lens hood or use your hand to shade the lens so that direct sunlight does not reach it.

How to Take Excellent Close-up Portraits

Close up Portrait

Taking portraits can be a pretty daunting task for both the subject and the photographer. Here are some tips that will help you produce commendable portrait shots.

First, ensure that your subject is comfortable. Do not force her to smile and show her teeth if she does not like it, or her photographs might not appear genuine. The true objective of portrait photography is to capture the subject?s actual expression and faking it defeats the purpose. You will be surprised at how wonderful her photographs can turn out to be if she is caught off guard. To concentrate on certain facial details, make sure that light is sourced from the side or the top of the subject?s face. Optimal results can be enjoyed if more light falls upon the subject and illuminate her features. You can achieve this with wider aperture to create a blurry surreal-like background while putting more focus on the subject.

Want to take good midrange portraits? Make sure your camera is fitted with the basic 90mm lens or a wide angle one if a crowd is involved. With the right telephoto lens, taking pictures at a party, wedding reception or graduation day can be an effortless affair.
